Q&A: When Must I Comply with Menu Labeling?
The “Guidance for Industry: Nutrition Labeling of Standard Menu Items in Restaurants and Similar Retail Food Establishments; Small Entity Compliance Guide” (Guidance for the Industry) has been released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This document serves as an easier-to-understand version of the final menu labeling rules released December 1, 2014 and is a must-read, step by step guide for restaurants affected by the legislation.  Healthy Dining’s culinary dietitians are delving into these guidelines to help you better understand the requirements and how to make sure you are offering accurate nutrition information.

With so many unique restaurant concepts and menus, we find that questions arise requiring additional clarification and direction from the FDA.  We will regularly be sharing these questions from restaurant operators and answers from the FDA to help restaurants comply with the menu labeling regulation.

Q: If I am subject to the rule, when must I comply with it?

A: You must comply with the rule by May 5, 2017, if you are subject to the requirements of the rule.
